A new study has found that a popular over-the-counter (OTC) hair-loss treatment can increase your risk for a heart attack or stroke. Propecia, commonly sold under the brand name Finasteride, was originally developed to treat hair loss in men but is now available as a prescription drug. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1997 for use in hair loss and in men's and women's hair regrowth.
Research conducted by the American Urological Association, the same group that led the study, found that taking Propecia with a daily dose of 1 milligram (mg) of finasteride led to an increase in risk of a heart attack or stroke. Researchers also found that combining it with a daily dose of Propecia with an OTC version of the drug Propecia reduced the risk of this type of heart attack or stroke by about 30%.
In a separate study, researchers compared the effects of taking a daily dose of 1 mg of Propecia with a daily dose of 1 mg of Propecia in men with moderate to severe hair loss. They found that Propecia increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke by about 20 percent.
The study, which was published in the May issue of the Journal of Urology, was conducted in part by researchers from the University of South Florida and the University of Michigan, and in part by researchers from the University of the South.
"The results of this study suggest that this medication can be used as part of a preventive strategy for individuals with moderate to severe hair loss, or as an adjunct to other therapies, such as hair transplantation," said lead author Dr. Paul J. Dolan, M. D., an assistant professor of urology at the University of South Florida.
Dolan, who also conducted the study, said the results could be "good news" for men who have had hair loss before, such as those who were experiencing a balding or thinning on the head. He added that men who were taking Propecia and taking it with a daily dose of 1 mg of finasteride may be more likely to get a heart attack or stroke, and should be monitored for changes in their blood pressure and blood lipids, and for any changes in their cholesterol levels.
"The results of this study add to the growing body of evidence that combining finasteride with other therapies, such as hair transplantation, can help slow down or prevent heart attacks or strokes," said Dr. Dolan.
The study was published in the March 2024 issue of the Journal of Urology. The study, conducted by Dr. Michael M. Hulken, M. D., a urologist at the University of the South, and co-led by Dr. Jennifer R. Heap, M. D., a urologist at the University of the South, is based on data from more than 20,000 men.

In its conclusion, researchers analyzed the data on men who had been taking Propecia for a year and found that men who were taking Propecia and who took it with a daily dose of 1 mg of finasteride were at an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke.
